Warriorettes get victory over Sevier County Bearettes

Posted

The White County Warriorettes welcomed in the Sevier County Bearettes for the first of two games for the Warriorettes, on Nov. 19. The Bearettes were coming off a 60-18 win over Maryville.  Watching the two teams warm up indicated both teams could score the basketball.

Both teams played well from the tip-off. The Bearettes used a press to try to force the Warriorettes to turn the ball over. The Warriorettes also played with a defensive intensity.  The referees were a little whistle happy, and players from both teams got in foul trouble pretty quickly.

In the first quarter, Nia Powers and Karley Gentry hit 3-pointers, and Ava Jones had a nice jumper from the top of the key.  However, the Bearettes had a 2-point lead after one quarter.  The second quarter saw the two teams swap baskets. The Warriorettes would make a good play only to see the Bearettes drain a 3-pointer on the other end. The Warriorettes found themselves behind at halftime by a score of 35-29.

The Warriorettes came out in the second half determined to cut into the lead of Sevier County.  Gentry hit a 3. Nia Powers fought for her own rebound and put it back in as she was fouled.  Her “and one” pulled the home team within 1 point at 39-38. The Bearettes continued playing hard and kept a small lead throughout the third quarter.

The Warriorettes fought through foul trouble and great Bearette defense in the fourth quarter to take the lead.  Both Powers and Reed fouled out in the final quarter.  Ava Jones and Pyper Price came in and played strong in the post. KB Frazier hit clutch free throws down the stretch.  The Warriors took the lead and held on for a 68-60 victory.

Powers led the Warriorettes with 17 points.  Ava Jones added 14 points. Celeste Reed scored 10. Karley Gentry scored 8, KK McDonald 7, and Lexi Golden 6.
