WCHS Warriorettes hang on for win over Livingston Academy

On Feb. 4, the White County High School Warriorettes traveled to Livingston to take on the Lady Wildcats.

Earlier in the season, Livingston took a 4-point victory over WCHS on their home court. On Feb. 4, the Warriorettes came out shooting, and Celeste Reed put in the first basket. Livingston came out shooting as well with two quick 3-pointers. Alaina Stiles answered with a 3 for WCHS. Two baskets by Nia Powers tied the game at 9. Reed hit a jumper, and Ava Jones hit one from the line to pull the Warriorettes to within 3. K.K. McDonald's 3-pointer at the buzzer tied the game at 15 after the first quarter.

The second quarter had the Warriorettes at the line shooting free throws for 11 of the 20 points in the quarter. Jones, Powers, McDonald, and Reed went 11 of 12 from the line. Senior Andi Haston hit a 3, and Reed had three baskets for the Warriorettes. White County had a 35-28 lead over Livingston at the half.

The second half started with a basket by Stiles to extend the Sparta lead to 9. Two big baskets by Karly Gentry added 5 more to the Warriorettes’ scoring. Reed added another basket for the Warriorettes, while Powers added two baskets to keep the Warriorettes scoring rolling. Reed finished the quarter with two free throws after being fouled by Livingston. The Warriorettes outscored the Lady Wildcats 15-12 and held a 10-point lead after the third.

The Lady Wildcats made a charge in the fourth quarter, trying to take another game from the Warriorettes. Again, the free throws kept the lead for the Warriorettes. Powers, Lexi Golden, Stiles, and Gentry hit big shots from the line. Baskets by Powers and Stiles kept the Warriorettes in the lead. Gentry had a three in the quarter and hit a free throw, with 10.9 seconds left, to extend the lead to 3. Powers inbounded the ball to Reed with 1.7 seconds left, and the buzzer sounded. The Warriorettes left Livingston with a 64-61 victory.
