Warriorettes win, Warriors lose in overtime

The Warriorettes tipped off against Warren County, on Jan 29. They jumped out on the Lady Pioneers and led 19-5 at the end of the first quarter.

Mia Murray scored the first 2 points for Sparta. Both teams traded baskets, and Warren got a steal and scored a layup halfway through the first, bringing the score 2-2. Alaina Stiles got a defensive rebound and passed the ball up to Morgan Quick, who then shot a transition pullup. After a few more traded possessions, Stiles got fouled and sent to the line, where she made both. Stiles also got the ball and went through the defense to score 2, making the score 8-2. Warren turned the ball over around the two-minute mark, and the Warriorettes found Nia Powers on a post-up for 2. Powers stole the ball, and a foul led to White County inbounding it. The ball went to Powers, and she passed it to Addison Frazier in the short corner for 2. At 1:28, Murray grabbed a rebound and went the other way with it. She passed it to Powers for another layup in transition. Warren called a timeout as they trailed 2-14. After the timeout, the Lady Pioneers made a 3. On the other end, Powers got an offensive rebound and was fouled putting it back up. She went to the line and went 2/2. With 10.2 seconds left, Quick hit a pull-up 3 in transition to close out the first quarter 19-5.

Warren County possessed the ball for the start of the second half, and they scored off of an offensive rebound. They also picked it up during the second quarter and made the score close going into halftime. White County grabbed several offensive rebounds but could not convert those to points. At 6:28, Warren made another 2. Both teams traded baskets for the next minute. Quick made another 2 points for the Warriorettes, but Warren made back to back 3s. They also made a layup, increasing the score 26-21 Sparta. Gracie Dodgen knocked down two free throws, but Warren made the next four points. Within the last 50 seconds, Dodgen completed an And1, and the Lady Pioneers made back to back layups. The score was 31-29. with Sparta leading going into the half.

Warren got the ball again in the third, but turned it over. Murray scored 2 points 30 seconds in, and Powers scored 2 halfway through, 35-29. The Warriorettes got their hands on the ball a couple of times. They finally rewarded themselves, and Powers scored 2 again. With 2:27 to go in the third, Warren got away with a snowbird layup. At 2:00, Murray saved the ball from going out of bounds, but the Lady Pioneers ended up making a 3. They also hit a jumper on the next play. Stiles scored 2 more under a minute, and Warren decided to hold the ball. Frazier stole it, and Dodgen scored a layup at the buzzer. The Warriorettes were winning 41-36.

Warren possessed the ball to start the last quarter of the game. Both teams missed scoring opportunities, until 6:17, when Stiles drove to the basket and scored 2. Neither team had scored for two minutes, so Warren called a timeout. After their timeout, they got a backside layup. Powers made another 2 on the other end of the floor. Sparta was sent to the line but went 0/2. Warren took advantage and knocked down a jumper. This cut the game to five points, with three minutes remaining. Back-to-back turnovers from White County allowed Warren the ball and sent them to the line, making 2/2. Warren called a timeout, with 2:19 left in the game. After the timeout, they pressed. Powers got fouled once they got across half court and made both of her free throws. Warren missed their shot, and both teams turned it over, but Warren went 2/2 at the line again. White County called a timeout with 1:27 to go, and the score at 47-44. With 40 seconds left, Dodgen made both free throws on a one and one. Warren made another basket and called a timeout. After the timeout, Dodgen was fouled again and also made both free throws. Frazier knocked down both of her free throws for a one and one, with 17.3 seconds left. Murray stole the ball and held it for the remainder of the game. The Warriorettes pulled out a stressful win 53-46. Nia Powers led scoring with 16 points.

The Warriors won the tip, but, 8 seconds into the game, Warren fouled. The Warriors missed the shot off the inbound. Warren turned it over, and Tanner Paul put the first two points on the board. Tanner Paul scored back-to-back two-pointers for the Warriors. Daniel Gentry chipped in and also scored 2, with 5:40 left in the first. Warren called a timeout after White County led 8-0. After the timeout, Warren got their first points on the board. Kade Clark stripped a 3 on the other end. Both teams traded possessions quite a bit, but, at the 3:35 mark, Warren got another 2 on the board. Tanner Paul got off another layup before the Pioneers scored 2 as well. Around 2:52, Grant Slatten scored 2, putting up his first 2 of the night. Warren scored again, but the Warriors’ Slatten and Clark scored back to back. The Pioneers got off one more shot within the last 15 seconds. White County led 19-10 going into the second.

The Pioneers jumped out in the second and scored 2 right off the bat. Tanner Paul took it the other way and made a layup. Warren County made back-to-back buckets, forcing a White County timeout; the score 21-16. After the timeout, Tanner Paul knocked down a 3, but so did Warren on the other end. Clark was fouled around 5:30 and went 1/2 on the line. As Warren threw the ball in, Slatten got a quick steal and laid it up. The Pioneers called a timeout. Clark went down grabbing a rebound, but Warren did not score during their possession. They ended up fouling Tanner Paul, who went 2/2 at the line for his 15th point of the night. Warren turned the ball over, and Tanner Paul drove the ball to the hole. Warren responded quickly and also drove it to the basket for 2. During the next possession, Warren was fouled and made 1/2 free throws from the line. They also made another bucket off of a White County turnover. The Warriors called a timeout, with 3:15 left in the half, leading 31-24. Warren County made the next five points: a layup, a free throw, and a jumper, to cut it to a 2-point game. Right under 30 seconds in the second, Jake Davis gets fouled and made 1/2 at the line. Slatten got the second rebound and put it back for 2. Warren turned the ball over, and Slatten fed the ball to Gentry as the half closed, 36-29.

Slatten opened up the second half with a completed And1. The Pioneers scored the next 11 points to cut it to a one-point game. Slatten got the ball in the corner and grabbed his own offensive rebound and finished it. The Warriors led 41-38 when Slatten got a steal and took it all the way for a dunk. The Pioneers scored 7 more points and took the lead 45-43. Slatten got fouled and tied the game at 45, with 2:30 to go in the third. Jake Davis stole the ball and passed it up to Slatten for 2 more. Warren County hit a floater. Clark came back in and grabbed an offensive rebound. He got fouled going up and went 2/2 at the line, giving the Warriors a 3-point lead, with 50 seconds to go. The Pioneers completed an And1 to tie the game again at 50. Slatten finished with a strong move. Neither team got a shot off within the last 11 seconds.

The Warriors went into the fourth leading 52-50. Slatten came out and scored 2, but Warren hit a 3 on the other end. Slatten made another 2 points two minutes in. Warren stole the ball and laid it up. Tanner Paul was fouled and shot one and one, made both. Both teams shared turnovers, and Slatten got fouled around 3:55, where he made 1/2 from the line. He also made a layup shortly after. Warren got in another bucket before White called a timeout. The Warriors led 61-57 just around two minutes left. Both teams traded a few baskets, and Warren County called a timeout, with 43.9 seconds to go. The Pioneers trailed by 2. With under 30 seconds, Tanner Paul got fouled and only made his first foul shot. Warren made a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, Warren County won the tip. Both teams knocked down big 3-pointers one right after the other. With 1:16 remaining, Slatten made 2 more points, but so did Warren. The game was tied at 69, with 11 seconds to go. White County called a timeout. After the timeout, the inbound play was stolen, and the Pioneers took it all the way home. Warren beat White County 71-69. Slatten and Paul led scoring with 33 and 23, respectively.
