WCHS Warrior basketball struggles against Panthers

The White County High School Warriors traveled to Stone Memorial, on Jan. 27, 2022, to continue district play.

Both teams started slow, going scoreless for the first two minutes of the game. The ice was broken by Stone’s Dylan Whittenburg, scoring two from the line. Stone continued to gain momentum, going on an 8-0 run, before White County’s Thomas Brock hit a 3, with 3:38 left in the quarter. Again, Stone put together a 5-0 run before Tomas Paul hit two free throws for the Warriors. The first quarter ended with Stone leading WCHS 13-5.

The second quarter began with both teams trading baskets. Thomas Paul started the scoring with a basket. Logan Dickerson came off the bench to hit a 3 for the Warriors. Paul was fouled and hit two free throws for WCHS. Jake Davis hit two 3-pointers to match the shooting of the Panthers. Japeth Richmond was fouled and hit one free throw to pull the Warriors within 9. Jake Davis was fouled at the buzzer and went to the line, with no time on the clock, to hit both free throws. The Warriors were down 28-21 at the half.

The Warriors showed a flash of energy pulling within two with a basket down low by Richmond and a 3-pointer by Davis to start the second. Stone regained their composure and went on a 7-0 run. With 6:19 left in the third quarter, the Panthers led 35-26. Brock hit a 3, and Richmond put in a basket for 2 to pull the Warriors within 13. The Panthers led 44-31 after three.

Davis and Paul combined for 10 points in the fourth, but it was not enough to keep up with the Panthers. WCHS’s Jeremiah Gardenhire hit a 3 from the corner to match Stone’s Matthew Bilbrey’s three.

The final score was Stone 65 and Sparta 44.
