Warriors and Warriorettes split with Stone Memorial

 The White County High School Warriors played a tough game Jan. 26 against Cumberland County’s Stone Memorial all the way through and won by three.

Stone won the tip but missed their first shot. The Warriors missed theirs as well, so Stone scored 2 at 7:05. Thirty seconds later, Kade Clark stepped up and hit a 3. Stone proceeded to hit a 3 and a layup. Tanner Paul got fouled and made 1/2. Stone made the next six points to go up 13-4. Clark posted up down low and did a nice move for 2. Stone made another bucket. Grant Slatten made back-to-back shots with a 2 and 3. Stone scored once more to close out the first 17-11.

White County possessed the ball to start the second but turned it over. The Panthers scored. The Warriors score the next three possessions: Clark and Tanner Paul made 2s and Slatten knocked in a 3. This brought the game up 19-18, with Stone still in the lead. Stone made another quick basket before the five-minute mark. Tanner Paul grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back to score 2. Clark got fouled making his bucket but missed his free throw. He still allowed the Warriors to take the lead 22-21. Tanner Paul also made a 3 the next time down. Stone knocked down a three as well to trail by one at 25-24. Tanner Paul scored another two, but Stone completed an And1. This tied the game at 27, with less than two minutes in the half. Stone made two more buckets before halftime, and Slatten stripped a 3. The Warriors trailed 30-31 as they headed to the locker room.

Stone owned the ball at the start of the third but didn’t get a shot off. They ended up with an intentional foul, and Slatten made them both. After the inbound, Slatten hit a jumper. He turned right around and stole the ball on defense and took it for a dunk. The Warriors led 36-31, with 6:36 left in the third. The Panthers made another shot on their end. Slatten dribbled down the floor and lost control of the ball. He saved it from going out of bounds, and the ball found its way back into his hands for a corner 3. Stone made a layup off of an inbound play. Slatten hit another 3 that brought the Warriors up 42-35. Stone made a bucket and was fouled but missed the free throw. Slatten went for a drive, and the foul was called on the floor. Tanner Paul sank a 3 off the inbound. Stone got off another 2 and so did Slatten. Under two minutes in the third, Stone patiently moved the ball and got a backside layup. Stone made another shot before the Warriors’ Gentry made a bucket with an assist from Tanner Paul. The Warriors led 49-43 going into the last quarter of the game.

In the fourth quarter, Stone had the ball and missed. White County turned it over, though, and Stone converted, making it a 4-point game. Tanner Paul battled on the boards and went up with a make and no foul called. The Panthers turned the ball over, and Slatten went with it, spun, and finished the shot. After a foul on Clark, Stone made a 2. At 4:40, Slatten backs down a Stone defender, spins, and elevates as he gets fouled. He completed his free throw to set the score 56-47. A charge called on Slatten gave the Panthers the ball where they made a floater. Sparta called a timeout and turned it over right after. Stone made another bucket and cut the score 56-51 as Sparta called a timeout. After the timeout, the Panthers turned it over, and Tanner Paul laid it up. At 1:47, Stone made a 3. White County passed the ball around until Tanner Paul was fouled. He made both of his shots in a one-and-one. With 43.5 seconds left, Stone ran away with the ball, scoring 2. They again cut the score to four and called a timeout. After the timeout, Tanner Paul was fouled again and went 1/2 for his one-and-one. Stone went the other way with it and scored. They called a timeout as they trailed by 3. A five-second call turned the Warriors over. The Panthers did not make their shot but instead fouled Slatten. He made both free throws and Stone got off one last shot at the buzzer. The final was 63-60. Tanner Paul finished another game with a double-double.

The Warriorettes got off to a slow start in their matchup, on Jan. 26, with Stone Memorial, but they battled back. Even though they fell to Stone, they finished the game with heart.

Stone won the tip, and Tessa Miller scored 20 seconds in. They also scored the first 7 points. At 5:30, Warriorette Mia Murray took the ball all the way down and scored a layup. Stone’s Keaton Freitag knocked down a 3, but Murray fired one right back. Another 3 was hit by the Lady Panthers as they led 13-5. Stone scored the next four possessions, and a White county timeout was called between. Around 2:12, Nia Powers completed an And1. The Warriorettes trailed 23-8. An offensive foul on Miller gave White County the ball back. Murray scored again, and Stone called a timeout. The Lady Panthers made three out of four free throws. White County’s Gracie Dodgen made a 3, and Alaina Stiles knocked down two free throws to close out the first at 26-15 Stone Memorial. 

The Warriorettes got the ball to start the second but turned it over. Stone took the ball and scored. Sparta missed a scoring opportunity, and Stone’s Annah Goss made a layup. At 5:51, White County’s Celeste Reed came in and made a shot from the block. A few possessions later, Miller made another layup. Dodgen drove the ball and made a bucket. Miller made back-to-back shots before Nautica Brown scored 2 for the Warriorettes. Stone also made three out of four foul shots, ending the half at 39-21 in Stone’s favor.

The Warriorettes made a run during the third, outscoring the Lady Panthers. Stiles scored the first points of the quarter off an inbound at 7:38. After a made free throw from Stone, Stiles took the ball all the way to the hole. With the Warriorettes down 15 points, Stone called a timeout. After the timeout, Mattie Buck scored 2 for the Lady Panthers. Murray was left wide-open on a backside screen and made her layup. With right under five minutes to go in the third, Buck made back-to- back layups for the Lady Panthers. On the other end, White County’s Reed passed out to Stiles for 3. The next play down, Dodgen put back a 2 to cut the difference to 14. Powers also got an offensive rebound and put it back. Stone made a basket and two free throws under a minute. Powers got an offensive put-back, Reed made a layup, and Morgan Quick stripped a 3 with 11 seconds remaining. The Lady Panthers got two offensive rebounds but couldn’t convert them. They led 50-39 going into the fourth.

White County possessed the ball opening the fourth. Dodgen and Murray made a jumper each right off the bat. This forced a Stone timeout as the score was 50-43 Stone’s favor. After the timeout, Stone turned the ball over. Quick was sent to the line and made both of her free throws. Stone was fouled and only made one free throw. Addison Frazier drove and scored 2, increasing the score 51-47. After a technical foul on Sparta, Stone went on a 6-0 run. After that run, Dodgen sank a 3. Around 4:41, Buck was left wide open and made her layup. Dodgen shot faked and drove for a jumper on the other end. A timeout was called by Sparta as they trailed by 7. The Lady Panthers scored back to back, but Dodgen knocked down a pair of free throws from a technical on Miller. Within the next minute, the Warriorettes fouled to stop the clock. Stone made four free throws during this time. Murray made a jumper on the other end, and another Sparta timeout was called. After the timeout, Stone missed three shots in three possessions, but Dodgen nailed a 3. The Warriorettes trailed, with the score at 67-59. A timeout was called by White County. Right at a minute, Miller was sent to the line where she went 1/2. With 51.8 seconds remaining, Dodgen made another 3 to cut the game 68-62. Stone made 4/6 free throws within the time remaining and a layup before the buzzer. The Warriorettes lost to Stone, with a score of 74-62, making them 2-2 in district play.
