In an intense showdown against Cannon County, the WCHS Warriorette soccer team battled it out on the field, resulting in a hard-earned 0-0 tie. Head coach Madison Mason, in her first year at the helm, commended her team’s tenacity and fighting spirit in the face of a formidable opponent.
“The girls fought hard, but Cannon had a solid defensive line and played exceptionally well,” Coach Mason said.
One standout aspect of the game was the Warriorettes’ rock-solid defense, led by a seasoned backline of seniors whose experience proved crucial in tight situations. Poppy Shank’s unwavering determination and clutch plays were instrumental in keeping the opposition at bay during critical moments, while goalkeeper Breanna Powell delivered a stellar performance.
“Poppy Shank demonstrated incredible heart, making crucial plays that saved us during key moments,” Mason said about her fullback senior defender, before talking about her goalkeeper. “Breanna Powell ended the game with an impressive 10 saves, ensuring not a single goal got past her. Her role is vital to our team’s success.”
The Warriorettes outshot their opponents, showcasing their offensive prowess and creating scoring opportunities that Mason said are bound to pay off in future games. The Warriorettes’ coach pointed to Kayce Wright’s unwavering effort in the midfield and resilience on the field, even after taking a tough hit, as an example of the team’s commitment to success.
“Kayce worked tirelessly in the midfield, pushing the ball to our strikers,” Mason said and then mentioned the Wright’s toughness. “She took a ball to the face and returned to the game with determination.”
Despite the match ending in a draw, Coach Mason sees it as a valuable learning experience for her team. She said the team as a whole recognizes they need to improve their passing connections and play more to feet, but she is confident these are fixable issues.
“I am very proud of the girls and the hard work they are putting in,” Mason concluded. “They’re seeing this game as motivation for our upcoming match against Macon County next week."
