The White County Middle School baseball program held its annual pre-season invitational during Presidents’ Day weekend. While Saturday was originally slated for a full day of baseball, the weather interfered and most games for that day were cancelled. Despite the rainy weather, coaches, parents, and team supporters rallied together and got the field in playable condition, and your WCMS Warriors defeated Gordonsville in a close 3-2 contest in front of a huge hometown crowd. Monday provided fans with plenty of baseball as games took place all day. Your WCMS Warriors went 2-1 on the day with wins over Stone Memorial and Warren County to finish the weekend at 3-1 overall.
The Warriors sent nine different players to the mound that struck out 16 batters and held the teams they faced to only eight total earned runs over the four games played. Offensively, the Warriors’ lead-off man, Gage Walker, served his role well, hitting .500 and leading the team with an on-base average of .778. Kaden Seibers led all hitters in total hits and runs scored, while also ending the weekend with a .500 batting average. Cole Sims wasn’t too far behind, hitting a stellar .400 with an on-base average of .625. Cole Gentry led all hitters in slugging percentage at .625 and in extra base hits, ending the weekend with a .375 batting average. Griffin Adams led the team in stolen bases and came up with a timely hit to give the Warriors the insurance they needed to secure the last game of the tournament, besting Warren County 4-2.
