WCMS Warriors and Warriorettes compete for District Tournament titles

Posted

A district tournament is a fun and exciting event.  The small middle school gym, in Dekalb County, was full of hundreds of people.  There were cheerleaders, players and fans in red, blue, black, yellow, and green, packed into the stands and spilling over to the floor. The maroon and gray of White County was represented well, both in the stands and on the court.  Both the White County Middle School boys’ and girls’ teams had played their way into a chance at a district title.

The girls took the floor first against a very good Prescott team. The White County Middle School girls came out with a lot of energy and gave the Lady Bulldogs all they wanted in the first quarter. The score after one quarter was 10-8 in favor of Prescott. The WCMS Warriorettes went into a 2-3 zone defense to limit the ability of the Lady Bulldogs to get the ball inside. Unfortunately, the team from Cookeville got hot from outside and began draining threes. The halftime score had ballooned to 28-17 in favor of Prescott. The girls from White County never quit and actually outscored the Lady Bulldogs in the fourth quarter. The final score was Prescott 51-Warriorettes 34.

Ashlyn Selby let the Warriorettes with 13 points on the night.  Selby, along with Bella Winningham and Lakelyn Grasty, were named to the all-tournament team. The season is not over for the Warriorettes as they will continue in region play on Jan. 31.

The boys’ team took the floor to take on the Upperman Yellowjackets.  The “Jackets” have a very tall and athletic team. The Warriors came out strong and kept the game close for a while, trailing by two after one quarter and just five at halftime. Upperman went on a run in the third quarter to push the lead to 38-20. The final ended up being 47-33 with the Warriors coming up short.  Mason Steele and Cole Sims led the Warriors with 9 points apiece. Steele and Sims were joined by Exavior Gamblin on the all-tournament team. The Warriors will also be in action in region play Jan. 31, at home, in region play.
