White County jobless rates drop for April

White County experienced a decrease in the jobless rate for April 2023, with a figure of 2.8 percent compared to 3.4 percent for the month of March.

The number was also an improvement from April 2022, when White County unemployment numbers was 3.1 percent.

Van Buren County saw a drop from 3.9 percent, in March 2023, to 3.6 percent, in April 2023.

In the other surrounding counties, Cumberland County dropped from 3.7 percent in March 2023 to 3.1 percent in April 2023; DeKalb County dropped from 3.7 percent in March 2023 to 2.9 percent in April 2023; Putnam County dropped from 3.3 percent in March 2023 to 2.7 percent in April 2023; and Warren County decreased from 4.0 percent in March 2023 to 3.0 percent in April 2023.

Statewide, the April 2023 seasonally adjusted rate came in at 3.3 percent, 0.1 of a percentage point lower than the previous month and 0.1 of a percentage point away from the state’s all-time lowest unemployment rate of 3.2 percent.

 Tennessee employers added 2,000 new non-farm jobs to the state’s workforce between March and April. The education and health services sector accounted for most of the new jobs during the month. The government sector and the manufacturing sector added the next largest number of jobs to the state’s economy. 

 Between April 2022 and April 2023, the number of new nonfarm jobs in Tennessee grew by 90,000 positions. The leisure and hospitality sector reported the largest amount of growth during the year. The education and health services sector had the next largest increase, followed by the government sector.
