White County Middle School Math-A-Thon to benefit St Jude

For over 20 years, White County Middle School has supported St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and even a global pandemic is not going to stop the students and faculty from keeping with the tradition or showing generosity and compassion to those who benefit from the hospital’s programs.

“St. Jude is leading the way the world understands and treats childhood cancer,” Megan Greene, WCMS sixth grade math teacher and the school’s Math-A-Thon organizer, said. “Every dollar raised helps to ensure that families never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing or food-because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.”

According to Greene, treatments developed at St. Jude have helped the overall childhood cancer survival rate rise from 20 percent up to 80 percent over the past 50 years.

“By freely sharing discoveries, every child saved at St. Jude means doctors and scientists worldwide can use that knowledge to save thousands more children,” she explained

White County Middle School students will be helping the hospital raise funds this winter through their annual Math-A-Thon. Students are encouraged to ask friends and family for donations.  They can collect cash or checks (must be made out to St. Jude).  Students can also create an online account, which can then be shared on social media pages so that friends and family can donate directly to St. Jude online.

“Information is being sent home with every White County Middle School student,” Greene said.

There will be instructions on how to create an online fundraising account, when the school will be collecting offline donations, and how students can earn prizes.

“We will also have a fundraising event each Thursday, in February,” she added, saying that the in-school fundraisers will give students another way to give and help others. “All profits will go to St. Jude.”

The in-school fundraising events from St. Jude include:

  • Thursday, Feb. 11: Pajama Day $2 (Must be dress code appropriate!)
  • Thursday, Feb. 18: Popcorn $1 (Plus 25 cents for each candy added to it!)
  • Thursday, Feb. 25: Doughnuts and YooHoo Drinks $1 each

“It’s been a difficult year for everyone, but it’s still important that we do our part and teach our students to be compassionate and generous,” Greene said. “Those qualities will long-outlast anything else we are going through right now.”

Greene said that members of the community who would like to give to the event can do so by accessing the school’s event page at http://fundraising.stjude.org/whitecomiddleschool
