White County’s jobless rate remains steady

Unemployment drops or holds steady in much of the state

The May 2021 unemployment rate for White County held the same as the previous month, while Van Buren County saw a small decrease in the number of unemployed.

In the report released last week, White County’s unemployment rate was listed at 4.3 percent for May 2021, remaining at the same figure that was listed for April 2021.

Van Buren County’s numbers decreased, from 5.6 percent, in April 2021, to 5.3 percent for May 2021.

According to the report, White County has a labor force of 12,113, with 11,598 employed.

Van Buren County has a labor force of 2,037, with 1,930 employed.

In the other four counties that border White County, unemployment figures were:

  • Cumberland County: 5.1 percent for May – 5 percent for April
  • DeKalb County: 5.2 percent for May – 4.9 percent for April
  • Putnam County: 4.2 percent for May – 4.1 percent for April
  • Warren County: 5.3 percent for May – 5.6 percent for April

Statewide, the majority of Tennessee counties recorded unemployment rates below 5 percent, in May 2021.

Forty counties experienced a drop in unemployment during May, while rates remained the same in 18 counties. Thirty-seven counties did see some increase in unemployment for the month.

 At 2.7 percent, Moore and Williamson counties continued to have the lowest unemployment in the state.

 Perry County had the highest unemployment, in May, at a rate of 7.1 percent.

Shelby County had the second-highest unemployment for the month, with 6.8 percent.
