Van Buren Senior Companion Program plans supper and auction

The Van Buren County Senior Companion Program has big plans for Oct. 5, 2019.  They will be sponsoring their second annual chili and soup meal, along with an auction, at Burritt Civic Center, beginning at 4 p.m.  The auction starts at 6 p.m.

The Senior Companion Program began in Van Buren County, in 1974, and has continually worked to better the lives of many senior citizens since that time.   This program was designed to help the sick, needy, frail, and elderly residents of the county by providing a sitter to stay in the home with them for up to four hours each day, Monday-Friday.   This gives their primary caretaker a chance to go to their job, grocery shop, or do what they need to do knowing their loved one is cared for in the home at no cost to them.  Our Senior Companions are only paid $2.65 an hour, which is the hourly wage set by the federal government.

There are many things our federal grant does not cover, which necessitates our need to look for other ways to raise money to help both the companions and the senior citizens with whom they stay.  This is where our community comes in as we ask you to join in this worthwhile project and help us raise these needed funds.

You can attend the meal and auction as well as donate any items to be sold including cakes, pies, desserts, and even nursery stock.  Other items are welcomed, including any monetary donations.

We are also collecting cents-off coupons you may have for us to use in buying items for bingo prizes and to make goody baskets for our seniors for the upcoming holidays.

If you have any questions, please call us at (931) 946-2607 or mail your donations to Senior Companion Program, 445 College St., Spencer, Tennessee  38585.

Senior companions are paid $ 2.65 per hr. That is a joke, right? That will not cover gas. Shame on the government….l’m embarassed.
