The Warriorette soccer team traveled to Cookeville on Thursday to take on the Lady Cavs.
The host team, who had already clinched the regular season district title, put the finishing touches on an undefeated 6AAA campaign with the 5-1 victory over WCHS.
The goal the Warriorettes scored was only the second goal scored against Cookeville (13-3-2, 5-0) in league games.
The two teams were locked in a scoreless tie until the 22nd minute of the contest when Cookeville broke through for the first goal. They added their second goal of the game just before the half to take the 2-0 lead into the intermission.
The Lady Cavs added to that lead with their third goal in the 19th minute of the second half and then a minute later ran the advantage to 4-1.
Fred Demers broke through with the lone goal for the Warriorettes late in the contest. That was her 19th goal of the season. Cookeville finished out the scoring with their final goal shortly thereafter for the final score of 5-1.
Coach Amber Lannom commented on the game, “Cookeville is the best I have seen them yet and we were able to hang with them. We kept our heads up and fought until the final whistle. I was very proud of the girls. It was an overall good effort.”
The loss drops the Warriorettes to 4-7 overall and evens their record at 2-2 in league play with one game remaining.
WCHS will host Stone Memorial Monday at 6 p.m. The regular season finale will serve as senior night.
The District 6AAA Tournament will be held next week with each game being played at the site of the higher seeded team.
