The White County High School golf team opened their season Monday by hosting Cumberland County at the Sparta Country Club.
A short-handed WCHS squad, missing one girl and three boys on the afternoon for various reasons, could not keep pace with one of their new district opponents. Cumberland County took victories over both the Warriors and Warriorettes.
The Warrior golf squad was missing three players, all of which quite possibly could have been playing in the top five for the team, come up short by 30 strokes on the afternoon.
Jesse Villard, a WCHS freshman, was able to match the low score of Cumberland’s with a 39. The Jets actually had two players card 39’s on the day to go along with a 40 and 41. Drew Holland, a White County sophomore, kept pace with a 41. The other two counting scores for WCHS were Kane Young (53) and Billy Buck (56). Ethan James finished with a 65.
Cumberland County has only one female golfer, Logan Cass, who shot a 44 on the afternoon. Ashley Sherrell paced WCHS with a 48. Andrea Sergio carded a 58 and Ginger McGinnis a 59. The Warriorettes were missing Allison Geer, who was away on vacation.
The WCHS golfers return to action Monday when they hit the road for their first away match.
