Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved several personnel changes and passed a single resolution during its March 21 meeting.

Water foreman Jacob Roberts turned in a letter of resignation which prompted the promotion of Kayne Tollison from Trades Helper2/Meter Tech to the foreman’s position. That move then made way for the promotion of Arthur O’Connor from Trades Helper 1 to the position vacated by Tollison’s promotion. In turn, Public Works director Dillard Quick also asked the board, after they approved the previous two moves, to approve the solicitation of applications for the Trades Helper 1 position. Likewise, the electric department asked for authorization to solicit application for the position of Electric Lineman due to receiving a letter of resignation from one of their current linemen.

The board approved a resolution to sell the following surplus and seized items on GovDeals: Old Police Duty Gear, Old Police Car Equipment, Various Seized for found property, Old Sound Equipment from the Amphitheater, 2004 Dodge 1500 Truck, 2005 Dodge 1500 Truck, 1997 Chevrolet Truck, 2001 Chevrolet Truck, 2006 John Deere Gator, 1972 john Deere Backhoe, 1998 Garbage Truck, 2004 Mack Garbage Truck, 1998 Coats Tire Changer, 2008 Ford F250 Truck, 2005 GMC Truck.

The board also approved soliciting bids for replacing the roof on the building at the city’s sewer plant after city administrator Tonya Tindle presented the request under new business.

Acting as the city’s Beer Board, the aldermen approved an off-premises permit for Sheata Zakher who will manage Power Fuel 91 LLC, the new gas and convenience store at 305 S. Young St.

Before the meeting was adjourned, Mayor Jerry Lowery informed the board that the train caboose which sits beside the walking trail adjacent to the City Cemetery has had the words, “Sparta, Tennessee” painted on it and is awaiting the addition of the city’s zip code, 38583.

“We think this will be a good photo spot within the city,” the mayor said.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the board will be 5 p.m., April 4.
