First outing positive for tennis

Posted

We were blessed to enjoy our first scrimmage match in several seasons with Warren County Pioneers traveling to test the training of the White County Warriors.  Head Coach Topher Wiles and Assistant Coach Amy Hawkins believed teams were prepped and ready to gauge growth of our talent as we played 19 matches at home between the men’s and women’s teams. We’re grateful Coaches Jackson and Horton invested the time in play. Here’s some of the big positive takeaways from the match.

Our depth is a wonderful display of our growth in White County. With 12 ladies and 12 men ready to represent the Warrior tennis program we’ve got a large active team with a wealth of experience.

Our all-court abilities and doubles technique is a major strength when tested against heavy baseline hitters.

Our morale was at a high at the close of the match as evidence of the high hopes we have for our 2024 spring season!

The integrity and sportsmanship of both teams was commendable!

Friendships were growing as both teams enjoyed pizza, Disney Frozen sing-alongs, and a lot of laughs around healthy competition.

Men’s Team: Win by score of 7-2

Our fellas fought hard in close loses in the top two singles against two large serving lefties from Warren County.  After that, we kept the control of every other match on our own strings. We even subbed in two junior varsity players for the #3 doubles who also found success.  In wins and losses, we all saw positives and room for growth! One of the best highlights was our senior #1 doubles of Jack Bouldin & Noah Gateley pulling out the win 7-3 in a final tiebreaker!

Singles Scores:

Gabriel Wiles - Loss 5-7

Jack Bouldin - Loss 4-6

Noah Gateley - Win 6-2

John Durfee - Win 6-3

Ethan Wiles - Win 6-0

Solomon Hawkins - Win 6-0

Doubles Scores:

Jack Bouldin/Noah Gateley - Win 7-6(3)

Gabriel Wiles/John Durfee - Win 6-0

Charlie Durfee/Mason Simmons - Win 6-0

Ladies Team: Loss by score of 2-7 (+1 win exhibition)

Our ladies team built relationships and enjoyed friendships across the net in a good test of pre-season training. The Pioneers showed great depth while our ladies displayed strong fight and great net skills late in the match. One of the best moments was the fight displayed by junior Marian Swindell by coming from back from 1-3 down to win in extra games 7-5!

Kate Frasier - Loss 4-6

Lily Colwell - Loss 1-6

Marian Swindell - Win 7-5
