Reed and Austin are honored at state capitol

White County High School received several school-wide honors during the 2023-2024 school year. Several students received individual honors for their excellence in the classroom and in extracurricular activities. On April 15, 2024, two WCHS students, their families, and faculty members accepted Senator Paul Bailey’s invitation to join him at the Tennessee State Capitol for special recognition in the Senate chambers.

 Senator Bailey extended invitations to Celeste Reed and Daniel Austin, two students who have made WCHS school history. Reed, with her exceptional skills, became the school’s first TSSAA Miss Basketball, a remarkable achievement. Austin, with his dedication and passion, emerged as a State winner for the FFA State Star in Agriculture Placement. Their hard work and dedication have not only brought them recognition but also filled the school community with immense pride and inspiration.

 During the afternoon session, Senator Bailey called for permission from the Speaker of the House to allow him to bring guests to the floor. The WCHS guests were granted permission to join Senator Bailey in the “pit” for a recognition address. Joining Senator Bailey were, Reed, Austin, Principal Greg Wilson, Coaches Michael Dodgen, Shanee Wallace, FFA Instructors Kim Eller, Kyler Moore, and State Representative Paul Sherrell. Senator Bailey shared the accolades received by Reed and Austin during their academic and athletic careers at WCHS. Principal Wilson, with heartfelt gratitude, addressed the Senate chamber, expressing his appreciation to Senator Bailey for the invitation and how proud he was of both WCHS students.

 Celeste Reed is the daughter of Darren and Stephanie Reed, and Daniel Austin is the son of Paul and Stacy Austin. Celeste has committed to continuing her basketball and academic career at Morehead State University, located in Morehead, Kentucky. Daniel will continue his academics and involvement with FFA at the University of Tennessee at Martin as a Pre-Veterinary major.

WCHS is proud of these wonderful students and is honored to have received the invitation from the Class of 1986 alumnus Senator Paul Bailey.
