The White County Middle School Warriorette softball had a long, tough week of softball before they headed out for spring break.
On a cold, windy Monday, the Warriorettes jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Warren County after singles by Mallori Swindell and Alliebeth Stebing scored Kami Clak and Annie Burrier in the bottom of the first inning. After a scoreless second inning by both teams, Warren County put seven runs on the board in the top of the third and then added 10 more runs in the fourth to end the game with White County on the wrong side of an 18-2 scoreboard.
“Warren County hit the ball as well as any middle school team I’ve seen in a while,” Warriorettes’ coach Gregg Segraves said. “When you combine that with the mistakes we made defensively, the outcome is usually not good.”
Kami Clark took the loss giving up eight earned runs. Allibeth Stebing gave up another six earned runs when she took over in the circle. On offense, it was Mallori Swindell leading the way with two hits.
Tuesday wasn’t much better for the Warriorettes who traveled to Baxter to take on the Upperman Lady Bees. Annie Burrier took her first loss of the season giving up 6 earned runs on 6 hits in the 10-2 loss.
“We just couldn’t get anything going and they seemed to get all the breaks,” Segraves said. “We played sloppy and struggled defensively and couldn’t get the timely hits to get a real rally started.”
Annie Burrier recorded two hits, while Anna McCulley and Allibeth Stebing each had one. Other than that, the Warriorettes’ bats were quiet on Tuesday.
However, after what Segraves described as a good, hard practice on Wednesday, the Warriorettes were able to rebound in a home game with Avery Trace on Thursday evening.
“We came out and hit the ball extremely well and played good defense,” Segraves said, describing the 14-2, 3-inning victory as his Warriorettes finally being able to “pound the rock.”
Stebing recorded her first win as a pitcher, striking out three while only allowing three hits and giving up just a single walk. At the plate, Annie Burrier led the Warriorettes with a single, a triple, and four RBI’s. AK Wallace also had two hits, a single and a double, and an RBI. Anna McCulley went one for two with an RBI while GG Tankersly hit a double and had two RBI’s. Treeah Powell and Allibeth Stebing rounded out the hitting as they each recorded a hit. Powell tallied two RBI’s as well.
The Warriorettes are off all this week for spring break.
