White County High School JROTC recently recognized local Vietnam Veterans during their second annual Vietnam Veterans Appreciation Ceremony.

On March 22, 2024, 17 veterans from the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps were celebrated for their personal contributions during the highly political conflict that became known as the Vietnam War. During the ceremony, United States Air Force (Retired) Lt. Col. Robert “Bob” Carlsen was personally honored and presented with a Spartan Warrior statue in recognition for his service as a Search and Rescue pilot during a 17-month tour.

Lt. Col. Carlsen was overseas from July 1971 until December 1972 during which time he was flying the A1-SkyRaider out of Nakho Phanom (NKP), Thailand. Lt. Col. Carlsen flew numerous Search & Rescue flights over South Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and the hotly contested North Vietnam. For his courageous efforts in the recovery of United States pilots, he was awarded three Silver Stars and seven Distinguished Flying Crosses, as well as numerous valorous awards.
