Blaine Parrish, a self-taught artist and lifelong resident of White County, has been painting for approximately 20 years.
Parrish’s goal, as an artist, is to connect with his viewers.
He enjoys using oils and acrylics. Of his diverse portfolio, his textured pieces stand out.
Parrish enjoys utilizing other mediums along with paint to create a textured surface on both canvases and wood. Parrish achieves this look by creating eye-catching movements under the paint that add to shape, dimension and perception.

WCHS softball drops 6AAA pair to start week

Breaking through for a base hit. Warriorette softball player, Ally Copeland, got the first WCHS base hit of the game against Cookeville Monday. The Warriorettes would, however, lose 11-0 to the Lady Cavaliers.

The offensive struggles continued for the Warriorette softball team as they dropped a pair of shut out losses in District 6AAA play on the road.
Monday, the Warriorettes were defeated 11-0 at Cookeville. The game ended in the mercy rule with a walk-off grand slam. On Tuesday, the Warriorettes traveled to Warren County and fell to the Lady Pioneers 9-0. The Warriorettes are now 7-22 overall and winless at 0-7 in 6AAA play.

Doris Ruth Ledford Messenger

Doris Ruth Ledford Messenger, age 70, of Sparta, passed away on Monday, January 21, 2013 at Memorial Hospital in Hixson, Tenn. Her beloved siblings were with her, as were other family members.
Doris was born July 18, 1941 in Chattanooga to Lawrence and Ruth Reno Ledford. She was married to Jimmy Messenger for 44 years.
Mrs. Messenger was employed for many years at the accounting office of James Hawkins in Cookeville. She was an accomplished rider of Tennessee Walking Horses, having won many awards throughout the states of Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Kentucky. She and her husband attended the Walking Horse Celebration for over 50 years.

Edward Cole, 79, of Sparta, passed away March 21, 2012, at his residence.
Mr. Cole was born May 9, 1932, in White County, to Benjamin and Winnie Usrey Cole.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; and four brothers.
Mr. Cole was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and was retired from General Motors Corp. after 35 years. He was a member of the Lansden Church of Christ.

Warriors fall to 3-3 in 6AAA with loss to Jets

Getting them up off their feet. Drew Holland fakes a pair of Cumberland County defenders and then puts the ball up for two of his eight consecutive points during the Warrior loss to the Jets in Crossville on Friday. WCHS travels to Cookeville Tuesday.

After playing even for three quarters, the Warriors were outscored 25-15 by the Cumberland County Jets in the fourth quarter and were defeated 67-57.

Jimmy Wayne Luna, 43, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 11, 2011, as the result of an auto accident.
Mr. Luna was born April 15, 1968, in White County, to James Leon Luna and Beverly Dilldine Luna.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Nov. 15, 2011, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, with burial in Taylor’s Providence Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m., Nov. 14, at the funeral home.
Oak Lawn Funeral Home is charge of arrangements.


Tax collections increase for September 2011

White County experienced its share of ups and downs in the recently released figures for sales tax collections.
For September 2011, state sales tax collections were listed at $1,086,300, with local sales tax at $303,148. The state sales tax figure was a decrease from August’s numbers of $1,093,570. However, local sales tax collections indicated an increase from $293,395, in August, to $303,148, in September
In September 2010, White County’s state sales tax collections were $1,112,280 and local sales tax, $281,082.
In September 2009, state sales tax collections totaled $1,084,537 and local sales tax, $288,395.

Cleveland ends Warriorette season for second straight year

Drawing contact. Warriorette senior guard, Brittany Dodson, draws contact from a Cleveland defender during Thursday’s game. The Warriorettes were defeated 50-42 bringing their season to a close with a 16-12 record.

For the second time in as many seasons, the WCHS girls’ basketball season came to a close at the hands of the Cleveland Lady Raiders.
This year the loss came in the first round of the Region 3AAA tournament on the Lady Raiders’ home floor by a score of 50-42.
With a roster made up of exclusively freshman and sophomores, Cleveland used their athleticism to hold off the Warriorettes in the elimination game.

Warriors avenge loss to Blue Devils

Sailing in. Ethan Clark, one of the three Warrior seniors honored prior to the game, sails in for two of his eight points in the win over Lebanon. The Warriors avenged a loss from earlier in the season and got a momentum boost going into the district tournament as it was their fifth straight win. Charles W. Wright, 81, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 8, 2011, at his residence.
Mr. Wright was born June 7, 1929, in Lafayette, to Julian and Rochie Ramsey Wright.
He was veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Feb. 11, 2011, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, with burial in Robinson Chapel Cemetery. Gerald England will officiate. The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m., Feb. 10, at the funeral home.

Dairl McCormick, 61, of Rock Island, passed away Dec. 21, 2008, at Livingston Regional Hospital, in Overton County.
McCormick was born Sept. 20, 1947, in Van Buren County, to George McCormick and Daisy Yates McCormick.
He had worked at Powermatic 37 years and the last seven years at TLT, in Sparta.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Janice McCormick; parents; and sisters, Carolyn Young and Judy McCormick.
Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m., Dec. 23, 2008, at High Funeral Home, in McMinnville, with burial in Crain Hill Cemetery, in Van Buren County. Michael and Phillip Buck will officiate.
