White County FFA continues PLOW Program

Posted

In November, the White County FFA Chapter continued their P.L.O.W. Program by reading to kindergarteners at Findlay Elementary School. FFA’s literacy program, P.L.O.W., which stands for Pacing Literacy OnWard, is a program to encourage young children to read, especially about agriculture. It is important for people to understand what agriculture is, why it is important, and how it affects them, which is what White County FFA is doing each month when the Chapter goes to an elementary school and reads to the students. P.L.O.W. is not only for elementary schoolers, but it is for all ages. Members of the Chapter also continue the mission of spreading literacy by encouraging their fellow peers to read and to teach others the importance of agriculture.

On Nov. 16, 2021, the White County FFA Chapter competed in the statewide Judging Competition at Middle Tennessee State University, in Murfreesboro. White County’s team had been practicing for months, and it was time to take our knowledge and put it to work. Our team placed 19 out of 55. We were able to further our knowledge of horses and meet members from all over the state. The knowledge gained from this competition will helps us as we participate in future horse judging competitions.

In addition, Nov 4, 2021, the White County FFA Chapter competed in district competition for Conduct A Chapter Meeting.  This a competition for first-year members only, and White County placed third in the district.  Members were required to learn basic parliamentary procedures and opening/closing ceremonies for FFA.  Then, on Nov. 9, our forestry team took to competition in the Upper Cumberland Invitational where they brought home a fourth-place finish on a variety of techniques, including tree identification, safety, compass use, and topography.
