Director of schools Kurt Dronebarger has come into the spotlight recently after reports of an incident from July 31 emerged.

During a video posted on the Warrior Media Facebook page, on Sept. 25, Dronebarger addressed the situation.

“As many of you know, life can often be hard and overwhelming. This last July, I experienced a day like that myself," Dronebarger said.

The video was produced in recognition of September as National Suicide Prevention Month.

“On that day, I made some unfortunate comments, which included a mention of self-harm,” Dronebarger said. “Though it was a very private conversation, it soon became very public. This experience, however, encouraged me to share my story with you. I am now in a good place – healthy and happy. But my story serves as a reminder that harming yourself or others is never the right path. For any facing emotional struggles, I urge you go seek help.”

Dronebarger continued his statement by giving information about mental health assistance provided by White County Schools. Free mental health resources are provided free to all students and their families through a partnership with Care Solace. It is an anonymous service that connects those in need to counselors and support. This information can be found at whitecoschools.net.

He further stated that he appreciated everyone who had reached out to him.

Dronebarger concluded, “If you’re struggling, please know that you are not alone and that help is available.

The Expositor reached out to White County School Board chairman Bob Young who released the following statement on behalf of the school board.

“The White County School Board is aware of the incident involving Mr. Kurt Dronebarger, Director of Schools, on July 31, 2025.

“The Board Chaiman, who serves as the Board’s liaison to the director, met with Mr. Dronebarger the day of the incident. The purpose of the meeting was to investigate the matter out of concern for Mr. Dronebarger, his family, and to ensure the safety and security of the students and staff of our district. During that meeting, Mr. Dronebarger explained the day’s events and assured the Chairman that he was fit for duty to perform his job as director.

“Follow-up due diligence was done to confirm Mr. Dronebarger’s assertion. No information coming from that effort contradicted Mr. Dronebarger’s statement nor did it reveal cause for concern for the students and staff of the district.

“Since the meeting on July 31, 2025, observations and evidence have shown that Mr. Dronebarger continues to perform the duties and responsibilities of his role at the level the Board expects.

“The White County School Board takes seriously the safety and well-being of our students and staff. All matters brought to our attention will be addressed in the appropriate manner for the situation, guided by policy, statute, and advise of cousel.”
