Dr. Joseph Thomas Judd, PhD, 88, of New Bern, North Carolina, passed away Sept. 18, 2023, in North Carolina.

Joseph was born April 22, 1935, in Nashville, to Ernest Judd and Josie Green Judd.

He graduated from North Carolina State University, in January 1963. He obtained a Doctorate of Philosophy and Animal Sciences. During his career, he became the Lab Chief of the Human Nutrition Research Center for the USDA, in Beltsville, Maryland. One of his studies had researchers look at the effects of butter and two margarines on blood lipids of 46 volunteers in a 15-week study. He was a great gardener, and some of his passions were growing Iris and fresh vegetables.

Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Norma; son, Jonathan LaFever Judd; daughter, Suzanne Nichole Williams; son, John Lee Williams; as well as their adored pet, Bischon Ace.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ruth LaFever Judd; son, Benjamin Ernest Judd; sisters, Earnestine Allen, MaryAnn Campbell; and a brother, Eugene Harold Judd.

A celebration of life will be 11 a.m., Sept. 30, 2023, at Old New Hope Baptist Church, with burial to follow in Old New Hope Cemetery. There will be no visitation prior to the service. Doug Benningfield will officiate.
