George indicted for vehicular homicide in death of Dell Lewis

Charges allege intoxication and recklessness

 A two-vehicle crash that occurred June 28, 2023, in White County, and resulted in one fatality has led to the indictment of 42-year-old Sumor Lynn George, of Pikeville.

White County Grand Jury returned two true bills, on June 8, 2024, for George after evidence was presented to the jury members. George is charged with vehicular homicide by intoxication and vehicular homicide by recklessness.

According to a preliminary report, on June 28, 2023, from Tennessee Highway Patrol, George was traveling in a southwest direction, on US 70S, driving a 2020 Ford vehicle.

William D. Lewis, 63, who was driving a backhoe, was also traveling in a southwest direction on US 70S.

According to the June 28, 2023, report, George’s vehicle impacted Lewis’s backhoe with the front end of George’s vehicle.

Both vehicles then left the roadway to the right side of the road. The vehicle driven by George then caught fire. The backhoe driven by Lewis overturned. According to the report from THP, the driver of the backhoe was deceased at the scene.

An initial court appearance for George was Jan. 23, 2024.
