James David Gray II (Jim) passed away peacefully at home, on Dec. 7, 2023, at the age of 68.

Dad was born May 31, 1955, in Highland Park, Michigan. He was the son of James David Gray Sr. and Mabel Lee Ray.

He was raised in Warren, Michigan, and graduated from Fitzgerald High School, in 1973. After graduating and getting married, Dad and Mom (Terri) moved to Tennessee, in the late 70s, to work with Uncle Russ’s (Castelli) paving business. He later started work at Glenlyte Thomas Industries, where he worked more than 30 years and was highly involved in the IBEW. He received an associate degree in mechatronics from Motlow State Community College and later retired from Franklin Fixtures, in 2020.

Dad eagerly became a part of the White County community by volunteering for the Cherry Creek Volunteer Fire Department, becoming an EMT for the ambulance service, coaching youth sports, and later refereeing youth and recreational basketball leagues. You would find him in a gym, on a field, or hear him and Glenda (Coffman) on the golf course. Dad was LOUD. You would hear him coming before you ever saw him. Known for his catchphrases, good and bad calls on the basketball court, and his “lefty” swings on the golf course, he loved all things sports, but more importantly, he loved us deeply. Our dad was one of a kind, and we will miss him greatly.

Dad was preceded in death by his father, James Gray Sr.; mother, Mabel Gray; sister, Sharon Castelli; brother, John Gray; nephew, Asa Castelli; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He is survived by his three favorite children and son-in-law, Jimmy Gray, Shane Gray, Katie Gray Gateley (Michael Gateley); brother, Joe Gray; brother-in-law, Russell Castelli; granddaughters, Madison Gray Summers, Tenley Gray; grandson, Henry Farley; step-grandchildren, Noah and Dalilah Gateley; nephews, Elijah Castelli, Jake and Jesse Gray; niece, Jordan Gray; and numerous cousins (you know who you are, and we love you).

We are going to celebrate Dad’s life, on May 31, 2024. Save the date!
