James “Jimmy” Balas Sparkman Sr., 77, of Sparta, passed from this life Dec. 23, 2024, at his home.
Born July 23, 1947, in Doyle, he was the son of William Balas Sparkman and Ida Beatrice Dodson Sparkman.
Jimmy started working at Goddard’s Garage, in 1967 as a mechanic. He and Sandra later bought the garage and renamed it “Sparkman’s Exxon.” Jimmy retired in 2000 and returned to the family farm. He is remembered for his love of watching his cattle, mowing the yard, and - above all - cherishing his family.
In addition to his parents, Jimmy was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Sandra Neal Haley Sparkman, and a great-granddaughter, Hope Nicholson.
Survivors include his son, James “JBo” Balas Sparkman Jr. (Sarena), of Sparta; daughter, Teressa Sparkman Baker; grandchildren, Kali Baker, Tena Baker, Madison (Tyler) Gentry; great-grandchildren, Hunter (Skylah), Holly, Hanna, and Hayley Nicholson, and Colter Gentry; great- great-grandchild, Maeve Nicholson; and sisters, Connie Jolley and Susie Masters.
Graveside service was 2 p.m., Dec. 30, 2024, at Greenwood Cemetery. His brother-in-law, Bob Haley, officiated.
Jimmy requested that donations be made to Greenwood Cemetery in lieu of flowers.
Oak Lawn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
