Mr. Jimmy Garland Young, age 76 of Sparta, passed away Thursday, April 16, 2026, at Tennessee State Veterans Home in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Jimmy was born June 25, 1949, in Sparta, Tennessee, to the late Milton Riley and Clara Kelsay Young. Jimmy served in the United States Army in Vietnam and returned home on his father’s birthday, April 20, 1968. He had a career as a truck driver that took him from New York to California. He enjoyed NASCAR and all types of cars and trucks as long as they were Chevrolets and Peterbilts.

In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by daughter, June Young; brothers Willie Martin Young and Riley Young; sister-in-law Linda Young; brother-in-law Wayne Cantrell; nieces Willie Jean Elrod and Kim Armstrong; nephews Walter and Mark Young.

Surviving family members include his daughter, Melissa (Lanny) Selby of Sparta

Son: Rudiger (Beth) Duval of New Hampshire

Son: Shaun (Bela) Young of Virginia

Son: Murphy (Audrey) Welch of Sparta

Special person whom he called his son: Leigh (Brandie) Smith of Dunlap, TN

Grandchildren: Holly (Drew) Wharton, Erik Young, Tanner Duval, Wyatt Duval, Grayson Duval, Clay Welch, and Sammy Welch

One great-grandchild: Finley Wharton

Brother: Justin Young

Sister: Hilda Cantrell

Sister-in-law: Reba Young

A host of nieces and nephews

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 am on Monday, April 20, 2026, at the Chapel of Hunter Funeral Home. Burial with full military honors by the Veterans’ Honor Guard will follow in Young Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-7 pm Sunday at Hunter Funeral Home. Dewey Young will officiate.

Michael Cantrell, Clay Welch, Curtise Young, Jeff Young, Lanny Selby, and Jason “JP” Powell will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are David Carson, Erik Young, Tanner Duval, Wyatt Duval, Grayson Duval, Sammy Welch, and Finley Wharton
