Joanne Marie Tompkins, age 62, of Ndungu Kebbe, The Gambia West Africa and of Walling, Tennessee, passed on to her eternal home Thursday evening, October 16, 2025, at her home in Ndungu Kebbe, The Gambia West Africa.
Joanne was born in Buffalo, New York on June 19, 1963, the daughter of Rev. Glenn C Tompkins and Helen E Tompkins. She proudly served the people of The Gambia for 27 years as a missionary through the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism.
The Tompkins family will have an informal memorial service at Gum Springs Baptist Church on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at 5:00pm. Pastors Robert Yockey of Calvary Baptist Church and Bo Hendricks of Gum Springs Baptist Church will say a few words. Burial will be in The Gambia West Africa.
Those left to cherish Joanne’s memory is her brother Robert (Bonnie) Tompkins of Mexico and are her sisters Nancy (David) Swanson of Walling, Tennessee and Ruth Wood of Blountville, Tennessee. She was always affectionately known as “Aunt Jo” to many nieces and nephews including Robert Will Tompkins, Kevin (Debra) Swanson, Dr. Pamela (David) Sanders, Dan Tompkins, Melanie (Stephen) Gooch, Erin Centi, Holly Tompkins, Benjamin (Chelsie) Swanson, Ryan (Kelly) Centi and many more missionary’s kids, great nieces and nephews and students.
In addition to her parents, Joanne was preceded in death by her brother Richard Tompkins and a great niece Catherine Tompkins.
