On Oct. 13, 2024, at approximately 8:30 a.m., Investigator Charles Sims, of Sparta Police Department was assigned a case in reference to child abuse.

According to the arrest warrant, when Sims arrived at the location, he was made aware of possible child abuse where the child had been transferred to Vanderbilt. Sims then contacted Jessica Cripps, of the district attorney general’s office, and advised her of the situation. Sims asked Cripps to get Investigator Randall Slayton, also with the district attorney general’s office, enroute to Vanderbilt to interview the mother of the victim.

“At that time, I made contact with Joseph Farris, the father of the victim,” Sims stated in the arrest warrant. “I had Farris come to the police department where I conducted an initial interview.”

Upon arrival of Slayton at the police department, both Sims and Slayton conducted a follow-up interview at which time Farris reportedly admitted to injuring his infant child. According to the arrest warrant, Farris explained “how he went about causing the injuries and also demonstrated how he caused some of the injuries.”
