Minute with the Mayor

I am thrilled to announce that on Thursday, Feb. 6, the City of Sparta will launch our weather radio giveaway program. Thanks to a partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), we have secured 765 weather radios to distribute to Sparta Electric customers.

This initiative was inspired by a concerned resident who expressed difficulty hearing the tornado sirens. In response, I reached out to TVA, and, together, we made this project a reality.

Our city staff worked diligently to bring this to fruition. A special thank you to Jennifer Roberts, who negotiated a deal that allowed us to purchase these radios and to Derek Wilson from the fire department who programmed them so they are ready for immediate use.

Weather Radio

 Distribution Details:

Date: Thursday, Feb. 6

Location: Sparta Electric building

Eligibility: Must be a Sparta Electric customer (one radio per household, while supplies last)

Requirement: A disclaimer form must be completed to receive a radio

I am incredibly grateful to our city staff and TVA for their support in making this happen. This initiative is an important step in helping our residents stay informed and prepared for severe weather.

Stay safe, Sparta!  God Bless, and finish strong.

Jerry Lowery, Mayor
