Minute with the Mayor

As we come together this Fourth of July to celebrate our nation’s independence, I encourage each of us to reflect on the true meaning of this day. The Fourth is more than a summer holiday—it marks the birth of a nation founded on liberty, courage, and the unshakable belief that freedom is worth fighting for.

To be an American is to value those freedoms—to speak, to worship, to gather, and to live with opportunity and dignity. These rights were won through great sacrifice, and they continue to be protected by those who serve our country, both at home and abroad.

As we fire up our grills, gather with loved ones, and enjoy fireworks under the open sky, let’s not forget those who cannot be with their families today. Many of our fellow Americans are serving in the Armed Forces, stationed far from home. Here in Sparta, we are also grateful for the dedication of our police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and other emergency personnel who will be on duty to keep our community safe while the rest of us celebrate.

Please celebrate responsibly. Use fireworks safely and legally, keep an eye on children around open flames and grills, and if you’re traveling, be alert and cautious on the roads. Let’s do our part to make sure this day is joyful, respectful, and safe for everyone.

From my heart to yours, I wish you and your family a Happy Independence Day. May we celebrate with gratitude, unity, and a deep appreciation for the American spirit that makes Sparta such a special place to call home.

God bless you, and God bless the United States of America. Finish Strong.

Sincerely,

Jerry Lowery - Mayor, City of Sparta
