Editor’s note. City of Sparta and The Expositor are partnering in a venture to feature city businesses. Each week, Mayor Jerry Lowery and City Administrator Tonya Tindle are providing a video production that highlights a specific business. In turn, The Expositor will publish a story about that business. “It is amazing what you can accomplish if you don’t care who gets the credit.” (Harry S. Truman, former president of the United States)

Morgan Furniture Center has stood in Sparta, helping residents furnish their homes, since 1965, and, according to Dave McCulley, who currently co-owns the store with his wife Jill, it will continue doing so for years to come.

“This was my dream, to run Morgan Furniture Center,” McCulley said. “I’m looking forward to being here at least another 20 years.”

McCulley, who purchased the store in 2022, almost gave up on his dream once, but as happens many times, life gave him one more chance, and he didn’t hesitate to take it.

“I started working here at Morgan’s back in 2001, but when the economy got bad in 2013, I decided to do what was best for the store, and I took a job somewhere else,” McCulley, whose father-in-law owned the store, said.

McCulley said he knew the store needed to cut back expenses to stay operating through a recession, so he gave up his dream to keep the family business operating.

“But, in 2018, I got the call,” he said. “Don [Blalock] was ready to begin moving toward retirement, and he wanted me to be the one to take over when he did.”

In 2018, McCulley returned to Morgan Furniture Center, re-familiarized himself with the store, the industry, and, most importantly, the customers. A year later, McCulley took over running his dream store, and, in 2022, his name was officially listed under the title “owner.”

Now, McCulley works daily to ensure that customers – whether they are Sparta natives, new residents who have chosen to make Sparta their forever home, people in surrounding counties, across the state, or even as far away as Florida – get the best deals, the best customer service, and the best products to make the visions they had for their homes and offices a reality.

“We have a licensed designer on staff, and she is excellent in helping customers choose the right furniture in the right colors and prints for their spaces,” McCulley said. “We can special order fabrics on at least 60 percent of our products. This means that if a customer finds a sofa, a chair, any piece of furniture that they love the style of, but the color doesn’t match their home, we can help them make that perfect fit.”

Morgan Furniture stocks, and special orders, a large variety of products – many of which are made in Tennessee, making the hometown furniture store supportive of local industries. Some of the brands offered include Ashley, Cat Napper, England, Serta, Simmons, Liberty, Flexsteel, American Heartland, American Woodcrafters, Bassett, and Tennessee Enterprises, Inc. In addition, the Sparta furniture store offers a variety of accessories to complete any room including lamps, artwork, and candles.

McCulley said at Morgan’s Furniture, he and his staff will work to get customers the best deal whether that means paying sales tax for customers (which the store does for approximately 90 percent of the year), providing free delivery within 50 miles and minimal delivery fees for any location past that, offering in-store lay-a-way programs, helping customers to find financing options, or letting customers know of upcoming specials so they can purchase at the most opportune time.

“We take care of our customers long past the sale of a piece of furniture,” McCulley said.

He said that working in his hometown means his customers are friends and family, and he and the six other employees at Morgan Furniture Center strive to treat everyone who walks into their store like such.

“From delivery to repairs to reorders to additions to your existing decor, we want our customers to know that their priorities are our priorities,” McCulley said.

McCulley said at Morgan Furniture Center they have everything offered at most of the big stores in larger cities, even as nearby as Cookeville. The difference, he said, is that being locally owned and operated, Morgan’s can usually provide a better price and more savings for their customers.

“Before you drive somewhere, give us a try,” McCulley said. “We will always treat you like family and will work to make your purchase something you can afford, something you are comfortable with, and something that makes your home everything you pictured it to be.”
