Nathaniel Adam Bastian II, 96, of Doyle, was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Ward Goddard Bastian, parents, Nathaniel Adam Bastian I and Mary Haynie Bastian; his older brother, Colonel Haynie Bastian and sister-in-law, Mary Louise Bastian; youngest brother, Marvin Bastian; and son-in-law, Wade Null.

He is survived by his three children, Ward Bastian (Rick), of Knoxville, Mary Beth Null (widow of Wade), of Quebeck, and Nathaniel Adam Bastian III (Missy), of Wartburg. Nate also leaves behind four grandchildren, Brandon and Natally Null, along with Mary Helen and Sarah Beth Bastian. Other family members include his sister-in-law, Mary Ella Bastian, of Franklin, and many, many nieces and nephews.

Nate was a longtime member at First Baptist Church Sparta, UT Alumni, and Sigma Phi Epsilon national fraternity. He graduated from the University of Tennessee with a master’s degree in agriculture after serving in World War II. Nate was an accomplished and well-known FFA instructor of Smith and White counties. Nate and Jean lived on her family farm (Goddard Mountain) that had been in her family for over 130 years. Admired and loved by many, he was a true Southern gentleman of grace and dignity.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Dec. 22, 2023, at First Baptist Church Sparta. Brad Walker will officiate. Burial, with full military honors provided by the Veterans’ Honor Guard, will follow in Anderson Cemetery, in Doyle. The family will welcome friends 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Dec. 22, at the church.
