Nina Mae Cope Griffin, 87, of Sparta, passed away peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by her loving family, on Sept. 8, 2023, at the residence of her daughter.

Nina was born March 23, 1936, in Sparta, to Ermon and Essie Irene Shaw Cope.

She had a few jobs, but she will be mostly fondly remembered for her time in the meat department of Foodland, in Sparta. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and canning from her garden.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Hill Griffin, who died Jan. 24, 2017; siblings, Ernestine Slatten, Bobbie Jean Davis, William Royce Cope, James Glenn Cope, infant brother Charles Douglas Cope; and son-in-law, Lloyd Watts.

Surviving family members left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Sherry Griffin Watts, of Mt. Juliet; son, Scott Douglas Griffin, of Sparta; granddaughter, Rebecca Watts (Joshua Parrott); grandson, Curtis Lee (Bashi) Griffin; sisters, Ruth Anderson, Brenda Frasier; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was 2 p.m., Sept. 10, 2023, at Hunter Funeral Home, with burial in Old Zion Cemetery. James Dukes officiated.

Johnny Denton, Steven Denton, Joseph Underwood, Rhett Underwood, David Griffin, and Jonathon Griffin served as pallbearers.

Hunter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
