Nobody’s somebody

A popular song’s lyrics say “I’m just a nobody, trying to tell everybody, all about somebody that saved my soul.” The truth is nobody is a nobody, and everybody is a somebody, but nobody is THE somebody that saves souls.

Last week, Tena and I spent some time in Ft. Myers, Florida, helping storm victims clean up debris, get hot meals and cold water, and basic supplies. We prayed with homeowners standing inside their gutted houses where four and five feet and more of sea water washed everything away. We saw cars in trees and boats in the streets.

Hurricane Ian came in with powerful winds and record storm surge without discrimination. The camper, the mobile home, and the beachfront house all suffered equally at the hands of a giant. To the hurricane, everybody was a nobody, but to God everybody is a somebody. And those somebodies didn’t lose a home, a car, a boat or personal items; they gained a community and maybe some found the love of Christ in their darkest time. I watched everybody helping everybody, and nobody got upset.

The life of David as king was drastically different than the existence of David as shepherd and brother. David the shepherd was somebody’s nobody. He was the eighth son, despised and dejected by his father and brothers, sent to the wilderness alone to tend sheep, hoping a wild animal would kill him. He was alone and isolated. Some would say he was a nobody, that is until somebody came calling. The prophet Samuel, as recorded in the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel, was sent by God to a nobody’s house in Bethlehem to anoint a new somebody as king. David was that man. The problem was, he wasn’t even there. The prophet sent for him while they waited. The truth is, the anointing was at the house, if David wanted it, he had to go to the house to get it. That day, a nobody was anointed king over everybody. Brothers bowed, his father bowed, and even the prophet of God bowed.

David’s giant, just like hurricane Ian, didn’t ask if he could enter. He didn’t care about the opinion of the people. He came, and he terrorized day and night - that is, until somebody picked up a stone. You see, God placed the right stone in the right place for the right man and even tumbled and smoothed it over time to fly straight and true to the right target. People won’t rally behind nobodies. But they’ll become warriors behind God’s somebody. God has placed powerful somebodies to lead people in the Ft. Myers recovery, and my friends and their church are those leaders with smooth stones in hand. The question is - are you the next powerful somebody giving people hope against their giant?

Let’s talk more about how somebody loves you, he wants to meet you, and give you hope and a future. Somebody should pay attention because you’re not a nobody. Your just a somebody needing THE somebody like everybody else.

We are Christpoint Church. We’re on Liberty Square, in Sparta, and somebody will be waiting for you at the door at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. this Sunday.  We’re real people, living real lives, serving a real God. Welcome home.
