Northfield spotlights students

Northfield Elementary School, which hosted the April meeting of the White County School Board, presented eight students to the board to be recipients of the district’s Student Spotlight Award.

The students were chosen using the district’s guidelines that state that: “Students today are increasingly more diverse in abilities, cultures, language, and learning modalities. As Tennessee schools move toward becoming more inclusive of all students, please recognize students who work together to create a system of support that promotes learning and belonging for all.”

Pre-k teacher Sasha Thornton chose Hayden Selby to be the recipient from her classroom.

“Hayden brings so much to our classroom! She is smart, helpful, and hardworking. She is always calm and patient when waiting for help or working with her classmates,” Thornton said. “Hayden shows respect to her fellow classmates and teachers. I have enjoyed watching her grow this year as she learns new concepts. I am excited to see what she will accomplish throughout the rest of the year.”

Rosalyn Phifer was chosen by kindergarten teacher Sarah Fuqua as the grade level’s recipient.

“Rosalyn is very patient and kind to her classmates.  She has a great understanding of others and works hard to include everyone in various activities,” Fuqua told the board. “Rosalyn wants to make sure that everyone feels accepted and is loved.  She is a wonderful friend to everyone who she encounters.”

Northfield’s first grade nominee was Racar Mahan, whose teacher, Amanda Walker recommended him for the award.

“Racar is kind to everyone and works hard to take care of all his classmates,” she said.

Second grade teacher Jennifer Milner presented two students to the board: Olivia and Kennedy Solomon.

“These two girls are always so kind and helpful to others. They show patience and understanding all around school. They have worked so hard and come so far since they have joined our Northfield team. They go above and beyond to do their best in class and with other students,” Milner said about the girls. “They make awesome little Huskies.”

Third grade teachers Sara Vinson and Brenon Twitty worked together to nominate their student, Ramsey Harris.

“He enjoys sharing his love of learning with others, including taking his own initiative to research topics discussed at school and then sharing it with his peers,” the teachers said of Ramsey. “He is always making sure that everyone is engaged in all activities inside and outside of the classroom.”

Raylee Hyder was nominated by fourth grade teacher Teresa McCaskey.

“She loves everyone and works to make sure everyone is included,” McCasky described Raylee.

Fifth grade teacher Crystal Summers nominated Kaiden Clemons as the school’s final recipient for the School Spotlight Award.

“Kaiden is a friend to everyone.  He is kind, respectful, and positive.  He stands up for what is right, and he helps other students,” Summers said. “He is a true gentleman.”

Because of COVID-19 restrictions and in an effort to promote social distancing, the students were not present at the school board meeting but were presented with their awards during the following school day.
