Mrs. Peggy Ann Smith, 94, of White County, Tennessee, passed away at her home in Mowbrey on Friday morning, April 24, 2026.  Mrs. Smith was born June 5, 1931, in the Ravenscroft community to Willie Hubert Osborne and Nell Austin Osborne.

Mrs. Smith devoted her life to caring for her home and her family.  She will always be remembered by her family for her kind, quiet, and loving personality.  Peggy was a great cook and will be best remembered by her family for her cornbread.  The family recorded her making it, but only one granddaughter, Rebecca, could come close to Grandma’s cornbread. In early years, she enjoyed camping, hiking, digging for ginseng, arrowheads, and other outdoor activities in Scotts Gulf with her family. Peggy was an excellent seamstress and loved to make log cabin-designed quilts, wall hangings, and potholders. She was an avid sports fan, especially the Tennessee Vols, the Chicago Cubs, and the Atlanta Braves.  Peggy loved antiques, and she and Betty would spend days scouring yard sales for items to put in their booth at the antique shop.  She also loved genealogy and was a valuable member of the Bon Air Mountain Historical Society, where she recorded family and community history before it became so popular. She was a devoted member and Sunday school teacher of the Eastland Church of Christ and a loved member of the Eastland/Mowbrey community.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents, loving husband Joseph “Dude” Smith of 66 years, 2 brothers, Charles Thomas Osborne and Hubert Edsel Osborne.

Mrs. Smith leaves behind to cherish her memory, daughters, Barbara Carolyn Holland and Betty Jo Bryant, and husband, Eli; two sons, William Joseph (Bill) Smith and wife Anita, and James Timothy (Tim) Smith and wife, Lois.  She had 11 grandchildren John Holland, Laura Roberts (Mike), David Bryant(Bonnie), Jason Bryant(Missy), Kevin Bryant, Rebecca Edmonds(David), Ashley Stover(Chris), Amy Roberts (Gary), Jessica Smith(Ryan), Erin Godby- Temple, Carrie Griffith(Jonathan), 35 great grandchildren and 29 great great- grandchildren, who couldn’t wait to get to go to great -great- grandma’s house.  One of her nephews said it best, "Peggy was the last of a great generation in our family”.

Pallbearers: Johnny Holland, David Bryant, Jason Bryant, David Edmonds, Mike Roberts, Chris Stover, and Gary Roberts. Alternate Kevin Bryant and Ryan Smith

The family would like to offer a special thanks to Gentiva Hospice for being so kind and compassionate over the last several months. They were a true blessing to our family.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Bon Air Historical Society would be appreciated. You can send donations to Tonya Tindle, 1514 West Ravenscroft Rd. Sparta, TN 38583.
