Solveig Gaul

Solveig Gaul entered heaven, on Aug. 9, 2023.

She was born in Bayonne, New Jersey, to Sverre and Amanda Hamre, who were then butler and cook for a wealthy family. When The Depression hit, they returned to Kristiansand, Norway, to raise Solveig. She was a young teenager during the occupation of Norway during World War II and had many stories to tell about her family experiences with the Norwegian resistance. At 19, she returned to the United States where she met an Irishman, in Brooklyn, named Richard Gaul. They were married for 47 years before Richard passed away.  She raised three daughters, in South Amboy, New Jersey, as a stay-at-home mom.

She is predeceased by her husband, Richard, and daughters, Carol and Alice.

She is survived by her daughter, Rose (Frank) Braddock; grandsons, Dan (Kim), Robert F. (Angela), Jason and  Dalton (Cheyanne) Skarzynski and Jesse Byrdic; great-grandchildren, Devin, Danielle, Lelan and Keira Skarzynski; and great-great-grandchildren, Athena and Matthew Skarzynski.

A graveside service will be planned at a later date, in Columbia, South Carolina.
