Sparta Drive-In Sees New Leadership

Burns Family is Passed the Torch on this Sparta Landmark

Few locations are as well known to Spartans as the Drive-In. Older residents recognize it as a big part of the county’s history, and youth still find fun in it today as they visit for movie nights. Now, however, the Sparta Drive-In has gone through one of its biggest changes in decades- a change in leadership. After years of bringing every ounce of passion and love to the Drive-In, Tommy and Judy Brown are passing the torch on to Jonathan Burns and his family.

Burns is no stranger to the Drive-In or the industry, of course. Tommy could only pick somebody he knew he could trust for the job, and Burns has a long history with it. Being one of his first jobs as a teenager, he worked for years in just about every role one could. Not only that, but Burns’ vision for the Drive-In is also meant to not take away anything from what people know and love.

“Going to add some things, but not looking to take anything away,” said Burns. “Try to keep it family-oriented, keep the prices low where a family can come out and bring their kids and family. My goal is to honor the past but explore the future.”

Burns also has experience managing other Drive-Ins, so his experience in this industry guarantees that he can guide it the right way. Some of the new additions he seeks to add on include expanded food menus, and other treats to add to the menu. There are also plans to add spaces for children to play and hang out either before the movie or if they are more interested in hanging out than the movie itself.

Tommy is going to miss the Drive-In, of course. He and Judy have owned the business since 2009 and worked at it since 2003. This past season, Tommy decided it was time to retire. He instantly knew who he had in mind, as he had promised to pass the torch to Burns a long time ago. While it came as a surprise to him, Tommy knew he could not trust anyone else.

The Sparta Drive-In will continue for years to come, but it will continue with a new family offering the same fun it always has. Tommy Brown is certain the Burns family can continue the legacy for many more years to come.
