2014 

  • Isaiah Gardenhire, a junior at White County High School, participated in the World Archery Tournament, in Wisconsin, after finishing seventh out of 11,000 shooters at the National event in Kentucky.
  • Roy Sewell, a White County coaching legend who spent years roaming the sidelines in the gym that is now named in his honor, passed away.
  • Lt. Robert Hall was named Police Officer of the Year while Sgt. Scott O’Dell was named White County Sheriff Department’s Deputy of the Year.

2004

  • Soldiers from the 278th Armored Calvary Regiment sent home an update stating that the Post Exchange on base did not have enough supplies on hand for the soldiers to purchase the things they needed.
  • Senior cheerleader Brandi Underhill was named to the UCA All-Star Squad and would travel to London as an All-Star cheerleader.

1994

  • A city/county agreement for E-911 was signed and presented to the board.
  • Margaret Pearson, mayor of Sparta, Rita England, of Nations Bank, and Wallace Austin, Chamber director, attended a groundbreaking ceremony in Nashville for the Bicentennial Mall. Each of Tennessee’s 95 counties were asked to bring local dirt to be placed over the time capsule buried underneath that would be opened in 2094.

1984 

  • The state comptroller’s office performed an audit of Clerk and Master and Register of Deeds and gave them positive reviews with no major problems.
  • Peggy’s Sew Shop completed its first year of business and was treated to a Red Carpet Ceremony by the Chamber of Commerce.
  • Sparta Country Club won its yearlong interclub golf tournament.

1974

  • Tom Wiseman, candidate for governor of Tennessee, visited the Sparta American Legion to campaign.
  • Sharondale Construction Company, of Nashville, was the bid winner to construct the new White-Van Buren County Vocation School to be located in Sparta with their bid of $759,700.
  • Rhonda Evette Dennis, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Leonard Dennis, was named Little Miss 1974 in the Jaycette pageant.
