Volunteers bring sunshine to children who are hospitalized

Posted

On March 16, 2022, the LBJ&C Foster Grandparent Volunteers and two Pacesetters volunteers gathered at the Putnam County Community Center to partner with Project Sunshine to assemble 400 basketball kits for children in hospitals throughout the country.

Project Sunshine brings play and activities to more than 175,000 children and their families. The kits included a basketball hoop that can be hung, foam letters, ball, eight colored pens to decorate journals, and a trifold activity brochure.

During this time, the group also celebrated Kerry Masters, for receiving the Tennessee Governor’s Volunteer Star Award for Putnam County. She volunteers as a Foster Grandparent about 35 hours per week, helping children with special and exceptional needs. She also

volunteers for the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program by calling at least three shut-in seniors per week for at least 15 minutes each time. This helps them to not feel so isolated. Masters also serves as the chairperson for the Foster Grandparents Program and Retired and Senior Volunteer Program Advisory Councils.
