Learning innovative ways to implement technology

Almost half of White County School District’s teachers attended this year’s Teacher Tech Day at Findlay Elementary, on July 25. The annual professional development event that began in 2016 is both led and attended by the county’s teachers. Twenty-one teachers trained their colleagues in various forms of technology that transform both teaching and learning.

According to Instructional Technology Coach Emily Barnes, White County has seen an increase in teacher capacity from the inaugural event, with approximately 120 teachers attending this year, making it one of the most-attended professional development events offered by the district. In addition to attendance growth, Barnes said that teacher-presenters are able to offer more sessions that focus on deeper pedagogy.

“Teacher Tech Day is one of my favorite days of the year,” Barnes said. “White County has amazing teachers, and this professional development event allows us to collaborate and highlight best practices around the district. The attendance success of Teacher Tech Day is a testament to the collaboration and expertise within our schools.”

The purpose of Teacher Tech Day is to learn innovative ways to implement technology while increasing student engagement and learning. There were 21 sessions for teachers to choose from. Topics presented this year include Google Workspace for Education, tech tools for student creation and how the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) impacts education and the general workforce. The event concluded with giveaways for teachers with prizes such as a document camera, class sets of headphones and a teacher Chromebook.

“Teacher Tech Day was outstanding as always,” White County Middle School teacher Jill Luna said. “This in-service is always both enjoyable and meaningful.”
