An elderly woman who was walking on Old Kentucky Road has died after she was the victim of an incident where the driver of a Honda Civic allegedly struck her and left the scene.

On Oct. 14, 2024, at approximately 10:55 a.m., Trooper Bryan Melton, of Tennessee Highway Patrol, was dispatched to a crash with injuries at 14464 Old Kentucky Rd., in White County, involving a pedestrian being struck.

The driver and vehicle had reportedly left the scene. The elderly female that was struck was being flown to Vanderbilt Hospital for treatment.

The driver and vehicle reportedly left the scene heading south on Old Kentucky Road. An inner right front fender was recovered at the scene of the incident that was identified as belonging to a 2012-2015 Honda Civic.

Approximately two hours later, White County deputies stopped a white Honda Civic that could possibly be the suspect’s vehicle. Deputies held the driver and vehicle until Trooper Melton arrived to verify the vehicle as the one involved in the incident. The vehicle matched, and the fender that was recovered on the scene of the incident matched the suspect’s vehicle.

The driver was identified as Irma Torrez, 24, of Monterey. A check of her driver license through E-911 Communications Center revealed the status was suspended through an action in Crossville City Court, on Aug. 28, 2022, for failure to file insurance.

According to the report, Torrez stated she “tried to miss the person pushing the cart and that she had gone on to work.”

Torrez later came back through Old Kentucky Road, which is when deputies saw her vehicle that matched the description.

The elderly pedestrian was pronounced deceased at Vanderbilt Hospital.

According to the report from THP, Torrez was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash, failure to render aid, failure to notify of crash, and driving on suspended license.
