Athlete of the Week: Austin Pionke

Posted

Long hours, early mornings, and relentless effort have paid off for Austin Pionke, this week’s Athlete of the Week.

Senior Austin Pionke has played baseball his entire life, playing all four years at White County High School. During this time, he has developed into one of the team's most dependable and versatile players.

Pionke has played a major role for White County baseball, especially his Junior season. That year marked a turning point in Pionke’s high school career, as he emerged as one of the team's top contributors offensively and defensively.

Pionke ended his junior season with a 0.408 batting average alongside a 0.522 on base percentage.

Austin also led the team in stolen bases, runs, hits, and doubles. Pionke finished with 23 stolen bases, 25 runs, 29 hits, and 6 doubles for the team.

While his numbers stand out, Pionke believes his growth has also come from his mindset just as much as his performance.

When asked what he’s learned since his freshman year, Pionke said “I’ve learnt to not get down when you fail because it’s going to happen.” This mentality has helped shape Pionke into a leader for the team.

Pionke plays a big role on the team not only on the field but also in the dugout and in the locker room.

Pionke's big role has left underclassmen to look up to him as a role model. When asked what he does to try and lead the team he said, “I try to set a good example and hope the rest of the team follows.”

Pionke’s positive attitude throughout each game helps the team to continue to work as a team and keep their heads up even in rough patches of a game.

While Pionke may be a role model for the rest of the team, his own biggest influence is by some of the people closest to him.

When asked who's been his biggest role model and influence, Pionke said “my dad has definitely been my biggest influence my entire baseball career.”

Looking ahead to his senior season, Pionke wants to make his final season one to remember for himself and the team.

Pionke has one big goal he wants to accomplish in this 2025-2026 season, winning the district tournament.

This is a big goal for White County baseball as they’ve not won a district championship since 1991.

Playing baseball for your entire life gives many things to love about it. Outside of team success, Pionke’s passion for baseball continues to drive him every day.

When asking Austin Pionke his favorite thing about his sport he said, “My favorite part about baseball is the amount of times you’re able to fail and still be great at the sport.”

Pionke hopes to continue his baseball career after his senior season as he waits to see how this season plays out.

For advice to his underclassmen, Austin says, “Do not let a day go where you aren’t grateful for it.”

With his senior season in his hands, Austin Pionke looks to leave a lasting impact on White County High School baseball. Through his leadership, work ethic, and positive mindset, he continues to set the standard for what it means to be a Warrior at White County High School.
