In her first year of playing high school flag-football, Anna Maples made a lasting impression on her teammates and coaches alike while giving herself an opportunity to expand her horizons and gain new experiences.

As a defensive player, Maples has embraced the challenge of a new sport, bringing her passion and dedication to the field. She explaine her decision to join the team was driven by her desire to try something different during her senior year, especially since she has spent much of her time involved in band since she was in sixth grade.

“I’ve always been a big fan of football, especially the Lions, so I thought it would be fun to experience it firsthand,” Maples said.

Maples’s journey into athletics has been a unique one, as she has primarily been involved in music and band throughout her school years. She’s played the piano since second grade and has been part of marching and concert bands since middle school. Maples admitted that sports weren’t always her focus, but trying flag-football has added a new dimension to her high school experience.

“Learning a new sport with my teammates has been really fun, and I’ve enjoyed making new memories and friendships,” she said, adding that her single season as a high school athlete helped her form friendships that she believes will last well beyond high school.

Looking ahead, Maples plans to attend Austin Peay State University on an academic scholarship. Maples will double major in music therapy and music education. Her season of the football field has given her a new outlet, and she said that she hopes to continue playing sports in intramural leagues.

Giving advice to others who might be hesitant to try sports, Maples encourages them to simply give it a shot.

“You don’t have to stick with it if you don’t like it, but everyone should try to find something they enjoy,” she said.
