Athlete of the Week: Camden Ryan

Posted

Camden Ryan, a recent graduate of White County High School, started his archery career relatively late compared to other members of the Warrior Archery team, but he put in the work to quickly excel in his new-found sport.

“I’d been wanting to do some bow hunting, and I thought it’d be really good to help me get better at shooting a bow and just was really interesting,” Ryan explained, further stating that his decision to take up the sport came at the encouragement of a classmate as well as his interest in both hunting and the outdoors in general.

It didn’t take long for him to realize he had found his place in the sporting world, and Ryan took it as a personal challenge to improve his shooting and rise to the top of the team’s ranks. He placed third at the state tournament in just his second year on the team and placed fifth in his final season. He also qualified to shoot at the national and world championships both his junior and senior seasons.

“It’s taught me some good leadership skills,” Ryan said about how archery changed his life. “My second year on the team I was named to a captain position and was put in a role to lead younger students.”

Aside from archery, Ryan was also a member of FFA, which he credits with teaching him leadership and speaking skills - though he admits he’s still working on his public speaking.

Looking ahead, Ryan plans to attend Georgia Tech to study environmental resource management, with hopes of earning a doctorate and becoming a professor.
