Five WCHS Warriorettes earn district honors

 The District 7 AAA honors were announced this week, and five players from White County were listed among the top girls’ basketball players in the district.

Warriorette senior Ava Jones earned 1st team honors and was named the All-District Defensive MVP. Jones, who has been a strong contributor to the Warriorettes basketball team for the past four years, pulled down 180 rebounds, or 6.4 per game, and recorded 84 blocks this season. On the offensive side of the game, was scoring 12.3 points per game for a total of 345 points while shooting an impressive 81 percent from the free throw line.

Joining Jones on the District 1st team is Gracie Clark. Clark, like Jones, had 180 rebounds, but she also had 62 steals. On offense, Clark was a force to be reconned with all-season long, putting up 13.8 points per game behind a team-leading 49 percent field goal percentage. Clark sank 30 percent of her shots from behind the arc and added another 78 percent of her free throws for a total of 401 points this season. Clark’s impressive season also resulted in 52 assists, setting her up to be a strong leader on the court in her final season of a Warriorette next year.

Bella Winningham, another White County junior, led the team with 14.9 points per game thanks to sinking 35 percent of her 3-point shots for a team leading 431 points. Winningham also led the team in steals with 63 while pulling down 132 rebounds. For her efforts, Winningham was named to the District 7 3AAA 2nd team, while also earning the Most Improved title.

Lakelyn Grasty was named All District Second Team and All District Defensive Player of the Year and earned 292 points this year.

The other Warriorette to receive honors was Sarah Winfree who was named to the district’s All Freshman Team. Winfree recorded 37 points, 22 rebounds, and 13 steals in varsity play this season.

Head coach Michael Dodgen was named Coach of the Year as he led the Warriorettes to a 10-0 record on their way to being named District 7 AAA Regular Season Champions.
