James Phillip Hill, known to many as Phil, 85, of Sparta and Chesnee, South Carolina, passed away June 7, 2024, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Hill was born July 18, 1938, in Beersheba Springs, to Marshall and Winona Fults Hill.

Mr. Hill graduated from Grundy County High School where he was recognized for never missing a day of school in his entire academic career. He had a long work career in the trucking industry - from driving to administration - beginning with Potter Freight, in the 1960s, and retiring from Service Transport, in 2005. He was an avid golfer, fisherman and longtime bowling league member. He played and sang in the Hill Family music group.

Mr. Hill proudly served in the U.S. Army where he worked in the Pentagon as an officer personnel Interviewer. He was a member of Hampton’s Crossroads Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Jamie Roberts, of South Carolina; brother, Robert Hill; brother-in-law, Delbert Denton; sister-in-law, Laura Hill; and nephew, Brandon Hill.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Edna Hill, of Sparta; daughter, Kimberly S. Roberts, of South Carolina; brothers, Tony (Barbara) Hill, of Tennessee, Tom (Terry) Hill, of Texas; sister, Kaye Denton, of Tennessee; favorite aunt, Ruth T. “Pinkie” Hill, of Sparta; sisters-in-law, Jean Golick, Lillian Jones, Rowena Caperton, Sue Vaughn; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m., June 13, 2024, at Hunter Funeral Home. Burial, with full military honors by the Veterans’ Honor Guard, will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends 11 a.m.-1 p.m., June 13, at the funeral home. Randall Kirby will officiate.
