Lon Morgan Lowery, 91 of Chapin, South Carolina, a native of Sparta/White County, passed away June 13, 2024, at his residence.

Lon was born Aug. 1, 1932, in Walling, to Edna Knowles Lowery and Henry Lowery.

After graduating from White County High School, Lon attended Draughon’s Business College, in Nashville, and enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves before being called to active duty, in 1952.

After his military service, he resumed his career with Royal Typewriter as a commercial salesman, working in Nashville, Indianapolis, and Washington, D.C., until his transfer to Columbia, South Carolina, where he was promoted to Regional Manager of southeastern United States. He and June also owned an office supply store in Columbia, South Carolina. During his retirement years, he drove a bus for Greyhound and Southeastern Stages.

In addition to his parents, Lon was preceded in death by his wife, June Ganzert Lowery, who passed away April 11, 2024; daughter, Sherry Lowery Stone; brothers, W.H. Lowery (Dale), Hugh G. Lowery (Jean), George T. Lowery (Mildred); and sister, Pauline Lowery Rowland (Jeral).

Lon is lovingly survived by his stepson, James Allen “Sonny” Gouge; grandchildren and step-grandchildren, Morgan (Leslie) Robinson, Lee Stone, Brandon Stone, Holly Stone, Justin Gouge, Heather Gouge, Sonny Gouge; brother-in-law, Ted Jaje; and several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Lon’s family extends special thanks to Empyrean Hospice and to the Empathetic Essence Homecare team Demetria Clark, Patricia White, Sonya Holloway, Iteasia Burkett, Lynn Burkett, Albreezia Dickerson, and Shamonique Favor for their diligent and compassionate care and to South Carolina neighbors Virginia Gibson, Gail Schreck, and Margaret Epting for their kindness and generosity.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m., June 21, 2024, at Hunter Funeral Home, with burial in Shady Grove Cemetery. Billy Lowery will officiate.
