Team Bushido traveled to Montgomery, Alabama, earlier this month where Jaxon Matthews and Blake Mether combined to sweep the 13 and Under Grand Champion title.
Matthews, a fifth grader at Woodland Park Elementary School, won the Forms Grand Championship, while Mether, a sixth grader at White County Middle School, edged him out for the Weapons Grand.
According to Dani Auberger, head coach at Bushido Karate Center, only a small portion of the team travels to tournaments that are more than three-hours away. Matthews and Mether were joined by five other athletes from Bushido Karate Center, all of whom have two or more years of experience on the competition mats.
As a team, they brought home nine gold medals, eight silver medals, and five bronze medals to go along with the two Grand Championship trophies.
“Any time you can flip your pyramid and bring home more golds than any other color medal, it’s a good day,” Auberger said. “This was only the second tournament of the season. To already be performing at this level is amazing. We are beyond proud of the work these athletes are putting in on – and off – the mats. We have no doubt that this competition season is going to see several of these athletes crush the goals they have set for themselves this year.”
